I have recently tried to install a Magic 3.1 into my PS2, it?s a version 7. I?ve messed something up that I do not know how to troubleshoot. Here?s the scenario:
After I installed the mod-chip, my installation looked good. I plugged in my PS2 and started it up. It went to a browser screen. I put in an original PS2 game and the browser found the disc and identified it as a PS2 game. So far so good. So I held ?reset? to go to standby. Then I powered up as documented and it booted. The PS2 welcome screen comes up, disc spins, and the white text ?PLAYSTATION 2? comes and goes just as normal. Then the problem begins. The unit just hangs. The disc keeps spinning and I have a black screen. Nothing happens. I left it running for a few minutes to see if anything would happen. Sure enough, ?nothing.
So I did what any self-respecting wanna-be modder would do. I popped the PS2 back open and double and triple checked all my connections. Broke out the magnifying glass to check for any bridged connections...nothing. I re-soldered a few of my uglier points just to be sure. Put it back together and same error. Now the only good thing was if I put in a backed-up PS2 game, I would not get the red ?INSERT PLAYSTATION 2 DISC? error. It would recognize back-ups as Playstation media.
Another problem I am having is that I have no sound. No sound at all, audio CDs produce no sound. The PS2 welcome screen, no sound. The ?blurp? sound that is supposed to be there when the white text ?PLAYSTATION 2? screen comes and goes, no sound there either.
After spending way too many hours on this project, I decided to roll back and completely removed the mod chip and all wires from the PS2. Just to see if it even worked in an un-modded state. Same error. This obviously means I messed something up, that has nothing to do with the mod-chip itself. If anyone knows where I can begin trouble shooting I would appreciate any ideas anyone has. I don?t know where to begin troubleshooting these problems. Are there any fuses or ICs that I can check, and if so, how can I go about checking them? Obviously I can check the fuses, but how does one test if an IC is still working? I have already cleaned the lens on the CD-ROM drive, all my ribbon cables are correct as well as everything else I had to do. I?m stuck, I?ve done the research, and put in more time than I wanted.
Thanks for reading my book here, I hope someone can help me out. Thanks.
