I got a friend who brought me his v5 PS2 for a possible repair.

The problem is that his PS2 boots PS2 CD-based backup games but doesn't boot DVDs whether DVD movie/game original or backup.

So I opened his PS2 and found that he has a "Magic III", that was the label on a small red modchip. I haven't seen a Magic chip before so I'm not sure, correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, I found that his PS2 does not read PS2 CD-based backup games burned at highish speeds proven to work on my own DUO modded v5 PS2 but his PS2 reads PS2 CD-based backup games burned at 2x.

So according to the preceding symptoms, is it more likely to be an install problem or a laser problem? Thanks.

I'm going to try his drive on my PS2 since they're both v5s and see what happens.

Weird, the lasers don't seem to be exactly the same, mine has green pcb while his has gold pcb. Don't know if it's safe to swap them.

Hmmm... Odd, his PS2 is able to read PS2 CD-based backup games burnt upto 8x at least. Wouldn't that mean that the laser is clean/aligned enough to be able to read DVD/DVD games as well?

Is it possible for a laser to be partially broken/working that it can read PS2 CD-based backup games burnt upto 16x but not read DVD original/backup games/movies? Actually yes, since that's what this v5 is doing but what I wanna know is if it can be fixed.

The PS2 has a sticker on the case that says "CD works @ 100%" Refurbished laser. The laser itself has a sticker that says "No CD"?!

In such a case, would aligning the laser or adjusting the DVD pots possibly fix this problem? Or are those the tell-tale signs of a laser that is irrepairable unless replaced?

    yes it is possible.

however, to check if this is the case. I would suggest installing the "problem" laser in a known fully working machine to test instead.
