V4 vrs V7 PS2 Questions
V4 vrs V7 PS2 Questions –
08-06-2002,05:28 AM
I have a 35001 V4 date code 1B PS2. I purchased a new 39001 V7 PS2 and wanted to know if I can sawp the DVD drive with my V4 without any other issues or calbration? I plan on picking up a Magic 2 chip for my V4 and wanted it to have the benifit up the updated laser as I will be using DVD+R media alot.
Other than the the laser being improved, is there any other real improvements with the V7 over the V4's? Which would be the best to chip with the Magic 2?
Thanks for the feedback!

LOD or Charlie would be the person to answer the laser swap question, but I believe they may not be interchangable.
I also haven't heard a great deal of success using DVD+R media in PS2s, although a few folks have claimed to getting a few to work, albeit in the newer models. The mainstream media for DVD backups is DVD-R (using a Pioneer or Panasonic DVD-R burner and quality media.) Good luck treading the DVD+R path...
The Magic Chip 2 is suitable for either the v4-1B or v7.

hate to break it to ya man, but the v4 drive isn't compatible with the v7 and vice versa...
the laser eye on the newer drives are physically smaller for starters. also, the drive on the v4 uses all ribbon cables for connections...i am not sure about the v7, but the v5 used twin leads with plugs (like the power lead for the fan) for some of the connections and the ribbons for others...also, the v5 added a battery on the side of the drive casing...
