V4 Install Disaster!!!
Hello to everyone on these forums 1st of all, well, I was trying to install a Magic 3.1 into a V4 NTSC system, I was soldering to the DVD controller legs (the points ABCD, GHI) and in about 1 sec, 2 legs came off the chip!!!
OK, Don't panic, I can fix it, done several no-swap installs, hmmm, I dunno....
I took some kynar, and on the chip itself, there was still little pieces of the chip legs sticking out of the chip, so I soldered the kynar to the pieces sticking out and soldered the other ends to the pads on the board where the chip had come off from, checked and double checked all the legs in that row with my meter, no bridges....
So I put everything back together, (no magic 3.1 installed, I never got that far, I did the controller points 1st and that's when all of this happened), anyway, put it back together, powered it on, it came on, hit reset and instead of the regular bootup screen, I got one of those "TV Broadcast system test" kinda screens, U know the one with the big blocky different color vertical lines and the loud long beeeeeeeep.....
So I took it apart, checked for bridges again, no bridges...what could be the problem...
Sorry to say I think you know the problem. It's likely to be a goner.
It might be repairable - but you'll suffer heavily in the process. Maybe take it to a pro? He'll shudder.
Well, It most likely is a goner, but there could be a chance it can be fixed if the problem could be pinpointed, right?
Any ideas on why I would get those lines and that beep instead of regular Sony screen?
Another words, what does the DVD controller chip have to do with the system starting up?
"but you'll suffer heavily in the process"
That made me shudder :) what did u mean by that?
Pretty much soldering a wire from the pad to the pin is ur only hope. Most likely its a goner. And it will not startup without those pins.
Someone told me to drill a hole or crack the chip or something to get to the inside to the where the legs come from, think there's a chance there? If so, how the heck would someone go about that?
That does work, getting through the ceramic IC chip withought destroying it or any of the other legs is near imposible thugh.
It'll drive you nuts not knowing whether your next move might work. The CD/DVD Controller informs the modchip of what's going on in conjunction with the BIOS.
Without the modchip, the BIOS commands the CD/DVD Controller and if either is phucked then the PS2 is phucked.
Your PS2 is phucked; it is no more; it is an ex-PS2.
Now there's a challenge for you. But take it to a pro. You've done enough damage I'm afraid. Sorry to be so blunt.
No problem, that's what I came here for...I've tried to resolder the wires, still no bridges, but now instead of the ps2 coming on and getting that weird screen, now i get no video and the eject light flashes....
So, considering the PS2 is dead, I guess I'll try to crack that chip and see if that works, Glad I got that V5 I chipped with Apple, at least I can still play, was gonna sell this V4 with magic 3.1....oh well....thanx for the help.
if u crack it, sell it to me :)
Hey necrolop, how about a trade?
