V4 Gap Magic 3 issue

Hi, I modded a V4 Gap for a friend of mine a while back, and it worked for months until a few days ago it decided it didnt want to boot ps2 games anymore(they would sit at the swirling pshere screen with the option to choose browser etc). I modded this back when I wasn't good at soldering, so the connections were loose, so i figured if i resoldered the whole chip everything would be fine. I left a few wires that where perfectly fine soldered to save time. I mainly redid all the bios legs and such. Any clue what could be causing this? I can't boot ANY ps2 games, only ps1 games. I havnt tried the ps2 with out the chip yet, I Wanted to see if there might have been anything else i could have missed.

Do PS2 originals boot??? If not, then there's a good chance your laser is on its way out.

most likly a laser prob v4 are known to have the worst lasers

well it can boot ps1 originals and ps1 backups, it cant boot ps2 backups or ps2 originals. hmm and i just noticed ps2 cd-r backups boot also. well what a relief that is. now I don't feel bad. I still have to help him out though. Thanks guys

It seems to have a problem booting dvd r and dvd originals. Are those harder for a dying laser to read? I get disc read error if i wait long enough at the browser.

out of curiousity, how much are replacement lasers, and are they much more reliable than the lasers that come with most ps2's? ie. not just more reliable than a v4, but even more reliable than a v7?

replacement lasers run from 50-60 dolalrs yhea they are more relible than the v4. most of the new lasers u get are probly gonna be v7 lasers so
