My turn to ask for help...

This one is a strange one - V3 installed with DUO...

    All points are good.

Laser pots originally factory set to 1198 CD and 665 DVD (bloody low for factory set DVD pot...)

With a clean and a slight adjustment to the CD pot - all PS1 and PS2 CDR based games work fine.

Problem - PS2 DVD games both original and copied boot to the PS2 logo but then go to black screen...

As the laser was already adjusted so low... no room to move there...

adjusting the white cog made the game boot faster to the logo but still no further...

Strange thing is - every bad laser I have had in the past wont actually recognise the media enough to get to the logo... this one does...

any ideas? is this just a dead laser or is the DUO only half doing its' job???

    PS1 CDR = ok
    PS2 CDR = ok
PS2 DVD = boots to logo then stops??

If it is the laser that is stuffed - how do other professional installers handle this sort of thing?

Do you still charge for work performed as the laser being worn is not your fault? (even though customer will feel disappointed as in the end they wont get a fully working install...)

Do you offer a discount just to be nice?

Do you replace the laser at a discounted price - if you have one around that is??

Do you charge for the extra 4 hours spent fiddling to try and resurrect the worn laser?

My problem is I am always wanting to be the nice guy - not the best way to run a business - but I hate leaving people dissappointed

Also, the funny thing about that 4 pack of 10K resistors is - the point that you attach the Z point to on the V3 I was just modding appeared to be faulty.

All other three were reading 10k but the Z point one only read 1k2... I thought this was the problem I was having above...

But when I lifted the chip leg and connected it to a 10k replacement resistor - the eject tray kept opening when ever I pushed the reset button... may be due to the 10k tolerence being off and actually being 11.8k on the resistor I installed or may be due to the fact that I lifted the leg and there may be a track under the chip connecting it to something else which prevents you from lifting it and maintaining functionality...

Problem with my one is - it was not faulty in the way a resistor normally goes faulty - i.e. it was not open circuit or high resistance - instead it was lower - so you can not add another resistor in parrallel to it - as this would just make it lower still.

I would have to cut the track and connect the new one instead...

and not knowing if that is the actual cause of the problem - I really don't want to start cutting tracks...

Any one with ideas as to my PS2 DVD booting problem mentioned above?

Also just tried a DVD movie and that would not boot either... can a chip do this?

Can the resistor being to low on the Z point do this?

or is it a simple case of a dead DVD laser?

I'd say you definately have a laser problem with that V3 machine.
You have to tell the customer that since his PS2 is fairly old, its not surprising that the laser has lost its legs.
You also have to be a bit firm and tell them that this doesn't come under your warranty and they have to cop the full cost of having the laser replaced. Its not your fault that they have a dicky laser.
I often replace lasers in V3 machines and if it has a mod already fitted, then I highly recommend that the laser be replaced rather than buying a new PS2.
Since you've already installed the chip, then offer a discount on the supply and fitment of a new laser. You ned to press them on this.
I usually charge $160.00 for a new laser, and that includes setting the new one up, plus a 12 month written warranty on the laser itself.
A new laser from Lik Sang usually sets me back $95.00 AUD, plus around $30.00 odd for shipping. I always use UPS.
Try and talk the customer into having a new laser fitted, then you don't have to back out of the install and not charge nothing.
    Best of luck!!!

Sounds like the chip to me . A laser is good if it gets to the ps2 logo.

Shadow how does a dvd movie play ?

Also check a long dvd movie and adjust with the white cog so that it can read the movie perfectly at the very end of the disk ie.. the rolling credits.. I use the 1'st LOTR disk to do my calibration.

You could have a focus problem as it reaches the out parts of the disk

no I tried a dvd movie - booted from browser as if it also recognised it, but the stayed black...

attempted to adjust the white cog - never done this before - but the process is simple enough - easier in fact that fixing a PS1 laser was.

Changing the cog made it boot to logo faster but did not help it get past that.

Relayer - the lasers you buy from lik-sang - are they re-conditioned or are they just out of other devices not related to PS2's - I was under the impression that Sony did not sell new lasers...

I assumed all were out of dead PS2's or out of drives for the PC that use similar lens's...??

Relayer - the lasers you buy from lik-sang - are they re-conditioned or are they just out of other devices not related to PS2's - I was under the impression that Sony did not sell new lasers...
When I purchased my first laser from Lik sang, I thought the laser was a refurbished one. Reason for this conclusion was the fact that both laser pots had been screwed down below 600 ohms.
I quized them on this and they told me that these settings are normal for the lasers they stock and they were definately brand new units and not reco's.
I fitted my first one and to my surprise it worked extremely well. Since then I've installed around ten of these and not one customer has complained that disks won't read etc.
They only stock lasers for the V3 and V4 machines, but the likes of Divineo stock the V5 (R types), made by Sanyo. I've yet to buy lasers from Divineo.
    Here's the URL's for both:
    Lik Sang
    http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?cat...oducts_id=730&

    Divineo
    http://www.divineo.cn/cgi-bin/div-cn/search.html

I've bought stuff from both companies and their both quite good and reliable and I would highly recommend both.

    I got a v4 thats only boots PS1 CD-Rs.

    PS2 DVD / DVD-R : Disc read error
PS2 CD-R: Browser shows the blue disc, press X and its just jumps back a few moments later. No PS2 logo either.

Is this a lens or chip issue?????
