I've been trying to mod a V10 NTSC console with a Magic 5k6 chip. It refused to read discs properly (laser would appear to focus, then slowly move from center of the media to the outer edge). Also the console would refuse to read the disc if I enter the browser. This is happening on both originals and on DVD-R/CD-R.

So, I removed the wiring for the chip, and I still have the same problem.

Then... I replaced the DVD drive from another console (a V7, IIRC). Same problem again.

Any ideas? I'm beginning to think this customer is bad luck (I managed to get his V7 into a state where sound would work, but video was dead and I gave up on it. Now the V10 replacement I'm giving him is making my life hell).

    Uhm...

Try to clean in a good way all the solder points and remove the wires also from the PS2 PCB.

But I belive you will need to take another trip to the "replacement" center in the next days...

Thanks for the ideas guys. I did clean up all the points again and tested the fuse. All are good and still no joy.

Oh well, I'm going to mod a V9 for the guy and call it a day. $400 down the drain. This sucks.

    I'll check the capacitor...

And cheap customers, you know the drill.

That being said, the 5k6 *only* works in V10. I don't expect it to work perfectly, but to break the console instantly? You can't get much worse than that!
