GOT IT WORKING!!! LOOK HERE!!!! :V1 DVD POT SETTING / Magic 2 V3 BOOTING Question... –
I have had my V1 PS2 modified by LOD with a V3 Magic 2. My problems are that I have erratic booting problems when using Verbatim retail DVD-R's and also regualr PS1 games/PS1 imports. If the console has been sitting awhile and not in use and I try to boot a DVD-R it seems to work all the time, on the other hand, after I have been playing a game for awhile and then try to boot a DVD-R it doesn't work usually and I get a red screen...I also noticed that the Magic 2 gets pretty warm, at least on the underside of the PS2 where it is located...Could there be a heat/temp issue that is causing the erratic boot? or are Magic 2 chips just not 100% reliable all the time? I was getting a stuttering / freezing issue with a retail GTA Vice City disc during the opening title sequence during the motorcylce drive by, but it seems to work ok in DVD mode (holding reset till blue light). Is this normal? I added a cap to the S pin but I don't think it did anything. Also, my DVD pot was originally set to 580 ohms, and I dropped it to around 500, is this too low to run at? Any suggestions are appreciated, as I have been tinkering with the azimuth and such for a few days straight now, and I am wearing thin with patience. I have gone through all of Charlie's FAQ's and guides and now am looking for more help...Hopefully
Even with originals, you've gotta do a hard resest (to the red light), wait a couple seconds, then hit reset. This was something I overlooked initially. I would get skipping on title sequences in games (depenging on the game). I did have skipping with Vice City actually, and Blittz 2003 was another one. Also, you might wanna check out gamegizmo.com's new setup guide for the Magic 2 v7. It finds new points for the power wires and is supposed to be much more reliable. I'm not exactly sure how it relates to a v3, however. On my v7, I have more trouble booting originals than backups. I may get my install tweaked to fix that hopefully... put in the cap, and maybe try the new gamegizmo point.
But does your laser seem to be working quite well with good media? I realize it might be a lttile difficult to seperate laser and Magic 2 issues. I have a friend who has a v2 and is thinking about a Magic 2. Do you think the laser would be up to it?
thank and goodluck
I would tweak the laser up to 1100 ohms! Then progressively down tiill you get reliability but not below 550 ohms based on your current setting.
Well I tweaked the pot up to 1100 just to see if that would effect the freezing, it didn't the original DVD of GTA Vice City still freezes at the same point in the game, unless I hold down reset for two seconds until the blue light comes on ala DVD/PS1 mode. Any reasons anyone could think of as to why this is occuring? What would cause these to work in DVD mode and not the single reset tap of regular PS2 mode? I plan on tweaking the pot back down to a value which boots the GTA disc reliably, as it would go to the broswer screen first at 1100.
fake magic2? who in the uk sell's genuine mod's
fake magic2? who in the uk sell's genuine mod's –
i bought a magic 2 v3 board for my 39003 uk pal, from divineo.com. after 2 week's of checking for correct connection's and continuity, checking adjacent pins for s/c, using continuity checks. it only boot's original games and psx backup's by switching the board off. ie, holding reset till the blue light flashes. red screen on everything unless i hold reset.
the question is this. WHERE CAN I BUY A GENUINE BOARD. is there a list of supplier's of genuine board's. i'm convinced that this one is a fake and don't feel like wasting any more time on it. i was employed in electronics for 25 years doing component level repair for a multi-national company. i have modded over 700 psx (all models) and over 80 ps2's (up to and including v6), all successfully.
apologies if the answer is in the forum somewhere. i haven't been able to find it.
Moderator's Note: You have a separate thread running on this so I expect answers to YOUR point to be directed there.
Ok, I have kept quite for some time on this issue as I was beginning to think that I was the only one experiencing issues....but I can't keep quite any longer. THE MAGIC II IS UNRELIABLE AT BEST!!!!!!!! C'mon people, there are two posters in this thread alone complaining of the same booting problems that I have experienced since day one. The thread starter even had his installed by one of the best in the business, and it is still unrealiable. It is time to admit that the Magic II is a poor solution. It is EXTREMELY unreliable! Yes, it works. But my experience is that it only works a very small percentage of the time. It is time to stop giving advice on how to fix the Magic II installation and start admitting that the damn thing does not work properly. For you posters in this thread that are experiencing problems....I have already done everything there is to do to get the Magic II to work, up to and including three new lasers, and I still have the exact same result. Look here http://ps2newz.net/forums/showthread...&threadid=1472
Note in my last post in the thread the test results after replacing the laser for the third time how simply turning the console off and back on again will cause the Magic II to fail.
Well, I see your point, as I think I may be wasting my time and effort trying to debug this thing. Funny thing is that CD backups seem to work all the time, and it boggles my mind that now I need to go into DVD/PS1 mode to play any DVD games reliably. So if the Magic2 is the root of all this evil, then what is a better solution for a US V1 SCPH-3001 with the 010 Bios that is reliable? Although after forking out $80 for the Magic2 and then $60 for the install, I don't know if it is worth it.
I fear your only solution at this point is to wait for the Messiah 2...although it, too, has not been proven to work on the older consoles yet. I am personally going to wait awhile this time to see what bugs shake out before purchasing any of the newer chips coming out.
Im a newbie and I'm curious. Am I understanding that if you turn the magic 2 off, then vice city works? sorry if I sound confused but I just put one in mine and I was wondering. Couldn't you just play it in dvd ps1 mode? or does it boot but not work?
Not possible to "turn off" Magic II....you are thinking of Messiah 2.
