    I have an old V1 (gh-004) console always showing my game backups as dvd-video in the browser. The disc drive appears to sync to the dvd-r disc great. Locks on fast, just never boots and shows me the dvd player menu after "unable to read disc". Went into the browser and sure enough, the console thinks is a dvd video. Retail game discs work fine. I do believe on occasion it has successfully booted a Game Backup.

    DMS4 SE Pro running ToxisOS 0.41

    Any suggestions?

    Boot-time controller mapping
    ============================

    When the console is booting, holding down certain buttons on controller 1 will
    activate certain modes/features. These are listed below:

    CROSS - Use standard boot (over-ride default boot mode setting)
    TRIANGLE - MC Dev.olution mode
    START - HDD Dev.olution mode
    SELECT - Fast boot mode
    SQUARE - Load configuration menu
    L1 - Disable modchip

    Since I never got a DMS4 before, I dunno if they are any "PS2 game" forced option like on Matrix Infinity.

    "manual": http://sksapps.com/dms4/toxic14.txt

    If still wont works, then I suspect something happened to the modchip, or a lossy wire inside.

    Oh I see. I know what you mean now. Same result.

    Believe I've found the problem.... looks like bad stack of DVD-R's.

    I thought I checked this, but was mistaken. Tried some DataLifePlus Verbatim's. Seems to be working great now. Simple problem just managed to make it hard for me to find.

    I'm not sure how to take the test result of a disc being read as a DVD-Video (which becomes unable to read since since it obviously can't be played), instead of a simple Disc Read Error as a game disc. When the PS2 switches into dvd player, different error messages are shown than when it's in game mode.

    Weird to me that they still showed up as DVD-Video if they are just bad discs... What do you think of that?

    Anyhow, using new dvd'r seems to fix the problem. Since this seems to be the case, do you have a preference of disc brand and type?

    Thank you,
    -=Kreg

    The type of disc format (DVD-ROM, DVD-Video) is read from the disc just as data sectors are, so if the disc reads unreliably it might return any garbage data for the disc type information. How the console interprets that is up to the software/firmware both of the original bios and of the modchip, but possibly DVD-Video format is a default for dubious cases as that is the only format (apart from CDDA) for which the console normally allows burned discs to be used.

    Best regards: dlanor

    Sounds reasonable to me. The logic goes with other things I've worked on and seems to fit here just the same.

    Though not much was really done in this thread, I still appreciate the help.

    Thank you,
