Used mobo by Sony

I got a PS2 from a friend to mod(warantylabel untouched). When I opened it, I got a great suprise... There was a NEO2 chip taped on the mobo!!! You could still see the solder on the solderpoints. The chip wasn't connected anymore. Asked my friend what happeded to the ps2. He told me a while ago, a game got stuck in the ps2. He returned the ps2 and got a "new" one.
Is there anyone who has seen this before. Is Sony replacing ps2's with used ones???

very much doubt that

they are very specific and state they can either replace the unit or send out a refurbished one which tbh is as good as new, by law they cannot give you a new unit in most countries, all unit's are refurbs with a new case and optics unless otherwise stated.
