Is it possible to use a USB NIC adapter in the PS2 instead of their network card deal? I have one of these just laying here. If it will work, is there any software I need or just pop in a Network game like Madden or something and it should work? Will it use DHCP to get an address, etc?

    Just curious.

    Thanks

yeh but dont think your sabving much money by buying the cheaper USB adapter now,

dont forget that the sony adapter has the IDE and power adapter oon the back for the HDD

so if you ever want the HD , ur gonna need the sony adapter.

yeah i think its funny most sites that sell the datel USB card, have this posted

    From GameGizmo
"The other major benefit of using a USB network adapter is that you dont use up your ONLY expansion slot on the PS2, which you'll need later for other add ons."

the problem with the usb network adapters is that there is no standard chipset. that means there is no generic driver. online capable games so far have done us all a service by including a number of drivers for different usb network adapters. but none are supported by sony, and there is a good chance that sony will push for exclusivity for its own network adapter.
therefore there is no guarantee that a usb network adapter will work in the future. i found it rather surprising that datel advertises its usb adapter as compatible with all future games when it cannot guarantee it..

why even think about the open bay in the back of the ps2. they wont come out with any other use for it... they would of but plans changed when the xbox came out. so the skip further work on the ps2 and moved right on to the ps3.

the Go.net adapter from datel is pretty good, but it seems like sony are gonna have developers stop supporting 3rd party adapters (atv2) but i'd say that any cross platform online game will prolly support them
