Trouble booting PS1 games using a Magic 3.1

Hi,

I have a PS2 (non slim) that is modded with a Magic 3.1 modchip. It loads up PS2 games just fine, but I can't get PS1 backups to load. I read that I have to hold reset from standby to get it to load, but I can't get it to work. If I wait til the blue light on the eject comes on, nothing happens and I get kicked to the browser screen. If I hold reset until the Sony logo comes up, the system restarts (I'm assuming this is normal)

Is there something special I need to do to get these backups to load? Even if I need to swap something, thats fine (even tho its supposed to be a no swap chip). I just want to be able to play these games.

Note you need a memory card exploit with keylauncher.

I've never had keylaunder installed to try that method... sure sounds neat, though.

What I have done is install a couple hundred 3.1's in my time, and they all booted ps1 games by holding the POWER button for 2 seconds. I'd suggest playing with the timing a little... try 1 second, 1.5, 2.5, etc, until you narrow it done.

For fun, try the above with the EJECT button as well... never know if it was installed correctly.

thanks for the replies. I don't have a memory card exploit, but I know someone who does, so he might be able to do that for me. I know nothing about the mem card exploit myself, so I won't be a lot of use there.

I tried the eject button as well as the power button... same thing. I played with the timing a bit too, but like I said, if I hold it for more than a few seconds, the system just reboots itself.

I guess I'll just keep playing with it. I can't get in contact with the guy who traded me the system, so I'm kinda on my own with this.

i've got a Magic 3.1 and it plays backup PS1 games with no problem

there are 2 boot procedures -

1) put the console on standby. tap the reset button
2) put the console on standby. hold the reset button down for a couple of seconds, at least long enough for the eject light to come on

either one can be used for original PS2 games
no 1) is necessary for backup PS2 games, no 2) is necessary for DVD movies and PS1 games (either backup or original)

at least those are the instructions i was given for the chip, and they work for me.
