What are the symptoms of a fried VIA? A friend is having problems with his PS2 mod AFTER taking out the modchip. I haven't looked at it yet, but I figure either there is solder somewhere there shouldn't be, a ribbon cable is bad, or a VIA is melted. How can I check the VIA to see if that is the problem?

A melted via is an obvious thing. Something wil have sunk at a grotesque angle into the layers.

Modchip.ca, the place everyone seems to love praising, has VIA installation diagrams posted. Lots of people just use those before they know any better.

If there's no obvious damage, like the leg's still there, then don't worry. My advice is half a second but there's margin there at 15W. Probably 2 seconds is too long but it all depends on the contact and whether the tip was clean and putting out full heat.

Why, do you have a problem?

Not yet, I took your suggestion and went to
    http://www.amidon-inductive.com/ass..._tapeswires.htm
to buy 32awg wires, they said they don't have them in stock and it will take 1 week to restock before shipping it out. I now disassembled my ps2 and I am waiting the wires to come.
