I have a V5 PS2 with a messiah 2 pro... Actel 0245 ( 1.08 ) fitted by a well known reliable source.
I seem to be having problems booting ps2 cdr, everything else boots 101% - that inc cd [ps (cd-r + orig) ] + [ ps2 cd ( orig + import orig ) dvd ( orig + imp orig ) and dvd-r ].
I can get the console to boot a cd-r after say 3-4 attempts which is kinda g*y. All others work with a straight boot.
Ive tried cleaning the laser both with a cleaning fluid and with a cleaning cd.
Ive even tried burning the cd-r games @ 1x 2x and 4x all with verbatim.. TDK and Memorex.
Any ideas any one... ?
This is really baffling me...
Regards
FH

Maybe your CD laser diode is well worn theough past use. Are there any accompanying noises when trying to boot? What exactly displays on the screenn?

Im not quite sure the laser diode is worn out because it plays ps2 cd originals and psx cd originals 1st time.
The only noise i get is the squeeky mouse noise when its reading the disk. It recognises the disk as a valid psx/ps2 disk straight away but instead of booting to the ps2 logo, it displays the 2 memory cards and then the red screen of death.
I only get this problem with cd-r's and like ive mentioned before ive tried 3 different brands @ various speeds.
Thx in advance

Is the E wire on properly? Are B&C crossed or otherwise incorrect? Do the CD-Rs work on anyone else's PS2 with modchip? Are they copy protected games and your reader/burner doesn't handle sub-channel data (which contains the encryption)?

Dont know about the wires as your friend backstar fitted it for me. He has been a great source of help and advice since my console has been fitted. I do not doubt any of hes work. Having said that he has also installed the exact same typr of chip in my brothers console which is a v3 pal and these games work perfect every time all the time and we all know the differences in laser between a v3 and a v5.
They are a mixture of games, ea ( copy protected ) and non copy protected and burned on a sony writer which supports subchanned data and raw copying. This was done using Clone CD.
The thing is these games work 1st time evrytime on the v3 but take a couple attempts now and then on my v5.
Myabe i have a fussy ps2 who knows...

So I go back to the somewhat worn CD laser diode. If the install is good then it has to be interaction between laser and media.

But then if thats the case why do my cd originals boot first time?

Because originals are 'pressed' as opposed to burned onto a blank media...This basically means a original game is 100% quality and a copy game has a lower reflectivity depending upon media used / state of writer...If you picture the way a laser reads the game is like such...It shines a beam of light onto the spinning disk surface, depending upon how much light is reflected instructs the processor as to whether it was a binary value one or zero, these sequences of ones/zeros form the game code. A cd/dvd writer 'burns' holes in the blank media to determine the said reflectivity.
