Swapping LA and/or laser (v9/10 syn.)
Swapping LA and/or laser (v9/10 syn.) –

I got a v9 here with tracking coil reading 1.8 ohms. Focus coil is reading 5.4 ohms. The ps2 starts up fine, but when a disk is inserted it gets DRE after about 20 seconds of attempting to read the disk. (originals, there is no mod in it). From what ive read here, I think I can safely assume this is the dreaded v9/10 syndrome. Am I correct in assuming that?
Since the tracking coil is only showing 1.8 ohms, I will have to replace the laser, correct? I do have a replacment laser here I can use (5.5 on both coils). Is there any way to tell if the LA is blown without replacing the laser? Also, if the LA is blown, can it damage the replacement laser while I test it?
One last thing. Would adding a resistor in the tracking coil track as posted previously on this forum make a difference now, or is it too late now to do anything aside from replacing laser and/or LA?
Any answers, comments, suggestions, etc would be appreciated. This is my first experiance with the v9/10 syndrome. BTW, this is an NTSC console and had a DMS3 installed (which I removed completly while diagnosing this problem).
Thanks,
Mike

Well, I got tired of waiting so I threw a replacment laser in. It still gives disk read error, but it does seem to try to read the disk for longer then before, before going dre. After a few hours of laser adjustments and testing, the coils are still the same so I dont think I have to worry about a bad LA killing the coils (assuming its bad as well).
So, does this mean the LA is bad? Should I replace it/try the BA-LA mod, or should I keep working with laser adjustments? I dont have a scope unfortunatly, so im stuck doing things the hard way.
