Yeah its a strange problem ! and a brilliant game to play but very annoying when you finally get to save and then get a RSOD.
I have a V4 and magic 3.1 and my DVD-R Princo works flawlessly
my friend also has a magic 3.1 but he has a V7 and he gets a RSOD using my princo DVD-R
i will try the tray opening trick tomorrow and see how that goes.
i guess the 3.1 will see the door close and wake up and start patching the bios again and say the dvd is ok and the RSOD will not be seen , the 3.0 does not support multidisk and would not see the door close and would not patch the bios so it should not work on any model old or new !

DMS3 help –
05-05-2003,09:56 AM
what i wanted to add to my message earlier is that im intending to upgrade to a DMS3, infact i have already purchased the chip. Before i go ahead with it i would appreciate some advice.
I have bought some 30awg kynar wire fromt the link at the DMs3 website. Is this stuff ok to use ? i beleive i need some 20 awg multicore for the power and ground!?. can`t see any of that on the site!. can anyone out there recommend the best wires for the \DMS3 job, and possible where i can get it online??
many thx in advance for any help

I can confirm that this method works on a v7 machine with a Magic3.1 chip.
But does anyone know of a way I can get this game to boot using a Neo2.2/SwapMagic combo? I've been told I can use the CDLoader disc, but anytime I swap the SwapMagic discs for the CDLoader disc, I get a red border.
Any ideas?

cdloader doesnt work on version 7 machines only 1-6
Double protection check prevents it from working

From what I can remember about the technicalities of the various mods detailed on this site, I know that the magic 3.1 switches off automatically after booting (whereas the magic 3.0 doesnt), so that explains the RSOD for v7 machines, since they're the ones that can do a 'double' check on the validity of a disc.
I've just got the kalisto double cd rip of splinter cell, and the same problem occurs, RSOD when trying to continue after an in-game save. Fortunately, the prescribed solution works well! here's my experience with this temporary eject technique to wake the magic 3.1 (and other such mods).
It's just like using a GS or codebreaker cd, you boot with the gs/codebreaker, pick your codes, then swap the game disc in when it asks you to. just think of the "do you want to save game" query of splinter cell as the same notice to remind you to eject and reinsert your cd before pressing X after your game saving. Works like a charm!
note: you might want to eject it, reinsert and let it spin up for about 1-2 seconds before pressing X to continue; i'm sure codebreaker users are familiar with the sensitivity of when to press X after swapping in a game cd. just listen to it spin up before continuing.
Thanks Bighap!

You bet. The only downside is I havn't been able to figure out a way to continue after a mid game save without getting a red screen.

Thanks for the info ps2daddy... but I'm actually trying to boot it on v1 & v4 machines using the Neo2.2 & SwapMagic combo.
Also,... I've fitted a few Magic3's with switches. Just wondering if anyone knew if it would work if you turned the Magic3 back on just before you saved it? That way you could leave the chip off so that it doesn't cause the ol' freezing problem, and then switch it back on when you need to load or save a game.
