Thread: solder iron?

  1. #1 solder iron?
    Talith2 Guest
I was looking at pictures of peoples mod chip installation, and was wondering how in the world do you solder a tiny dot like that. The only solder irons i have seen had huge ends to them, and would make soldering something like that almost impossible. So my question is, what is the correct size, or smallest solder iron they make for soldering mod chips.

Iv been looking at mod chips, and they really arnt all that exspensive, that is if you can solder them yourself. I was looking at soldering pumps and braids, and with the help of those tools, it looks like if you make a mistake like getting solder across two points, then you can easily remove it and start agian. Anyone here ever use them? Are they recomended?

EDIT Also, i was wondering if mod chips came with the required wires, or is that something you need to buy yourself. I guess im asking if modchips come ready to install "out of the box"

Yes. If you accidently make a bridge between two ic legs then you need the desoldering braid to suck out the solder. They are recommended to have.

Yup the braid works very good, just don't keep the iron on a point or chip for a long duration or you might fry something. As for the modchips coming with wires, they do not. You have to buy them seperately. From the xbox and ps2 chip I got, none came with wires but last year when I ordered a ps1 chip it came with 7 wires.

I agree, soldering braid works well, but you can still mess up pretty bad if you are not careful. Radio Shack carries what they call wrapping wire, or maybe magnet wire, can't remember, but it is great stuff, will do the trick for all points except ground and power.

    Good luck.
