All it really does is makes it cooler or something. You really dont need to do it unless something caused it to break.

Romeo mod edit the power from 12v to 5v.
and Controller will not use full power ( 12v ) this will "save" the Laser Coils.
if your Laser have bad Coils Romeo fix will not help here , your BA Chip will die again .
before you replace the BA chip check the Laser Coils if they are less then 4.x then you need to replace the Laser.

Hey, thanks to all that replied! Is it possible to burn the coils on a V7 laser?? I had a HD7/Sanyo (which is a V9 laser too isnt it?) and just ordered a new BA and a new 400C because i suspect the HD7 of killing the old BA. I just want to prevent this from happening again... Any suggestions?

And how will you swap the two lasers ??? There was a method for V5 boards, and $ony + some nasty guys can do it, but I doubt that you belong to them. So a 400c won't work in a machine that had a HD7, so you won;t save anything just making trouble to yourself. The coils can be burnt on ANY model, but that most easily can be done on the V9/V10. Anyway Messiah team was busted (roumors were spreaded that time) also CharliePs2 left for good because of some unknown/known reasons...

    regards, Stephen

i bought a new motherboard that was a GH-019 and uses a 400c laser, used the HD7 laser on that motherboard (which was originally from a GH-022, but died) after testing out on another 400c motherboard... Basically, i tried the HD7 on my other V7 which has a 400c laser and it worked, so i thought using a HD7 in my NEW motherboard (the one that replaced the GH-022) would work fine as it worked in my other one and it didnt... ANyway, long story short, the motherboard i have now is supposed to use a 400C laser and i have a 400C (brand new of course) coming in the mail, thats why it will work. Back to my original question now, is there a way to protect the new BA chip i have coming??

No need to protect the BA. The BA itself is a much tolerant driver IC compared to the LA. As you will get a NEW laser and that is probably in excellent condition (perfect coils plus a powerfull laserdiode) then your BA will be in safe. As there are $ony softwares out there to adjust the board settings and you can adjust laser settings *type for example* using the sw then that is quite unbelivable that a board worked FINE with a different laser. And up til now you are the 1st person who posted that this combintion worked. As said on V5 there was a method to change the laser type without using any software, but I do not know of any hardware modification on a V7 to achieve the same. (except the $ony software method)

    regards, Stephen

pS: it's easy to save the BA, just use quality media

Well, when i loaded up any game with the HD7 laser on the 400c motherboard, it did spin really fast when the cd/dvd was inserted but once it slowed down, it booted and loaded just fine. No modifications to the motherboard (besides the Messiah 2... maybe that had something to do with it working in the one and not the other... maybe?) and it worked..

Also, i do use good media... I have some verbatims but they suck.. My V7 and my bros V8 didnt like them... They skip on ALL bgms and load time was unreal. I have had great luck with Fujifilm cd and dvd, which i think are ritek 3 or 4s if i'm not mistaken...
