Ribbon Clip 'advice'

Here is some simple advice for people which you would expect to be just simple common sense. The type of thing that should not need saying, knowledge that we all somehow posses at birth. Despite this I went against nature and ignored all this;

Do NOT (I mean it, look I used capitals) decide to take your PS2 apart after alcohol or even worse alcohol and smoke.

So now I find myself with non-functioning controllers. I did manage to do remarkably well on this one. The ribbon got pulled out of the brown clip on the PCB and damaged it, only slightly but it doesn't clip down very well. This was not so terrible because using some tape and positioning the ribbon well it was all sorted.

Then the CD drive would only spin 1/4 turn and while fixing that (the small copper ribbon) I did my worst. The controller module slipped from the ps2 and jerked down damaging the black clip on the controller module, ripping the top part off and scuffing the ribbon.

This is where I am now. The ribbon is scuffed so the black surface has been scuffed off in a section about 10mm long. Using tape and a match stick and a finger I got the ribbon in place and they neither port or mem card slot worked.

So I have ****ed something but is it likely to be just the ribbon? How hard does the ribbon need to be 'clipped'? Has anyone got any advice on repairing the clips or know of a supplier which has part of the clip that closes down for sale?

If it is indeed your controller cable, you can try purchasing it off one of the several sites out there that sell PS2 parts. To check if this is indeed the problem, you may want to try using a cable from another PS2 if you have access to one.


Since your controller cable may already be screwed, you might try cutting off the bad section (if it's near the end), and then take a razor blade and scrap enough of the coating off the bottom in order to expose the metal strips that touch the contacts of the controller clip.

I purchased a new ribbon and I tried it quickly last night and got nowhere. Could it be a fuse?

It certainly still could be the clips which I broke however the ribbon seemed to be seated well. I had to use a combination of a match on the PCB clip and tape on the controller module clip.

Can anyone reccomend further action?

ive reclipped my eject cable

aint easy

u gotta strip the outer coating

then u get another coating
u gotta scratch off that surface where the pins are

then glue on the blue plastic support

i had some really crazy crazy glue

ended up gluing my fingers together in like a seonc

i had to cuit them apart

I have re-tried to install the new ribbon cable and failed. Neither controller port or memory card slot works. I am pretty sure I got the ribbon seated properly on the PCB clip so I have got the possibilities down to these;

1) The ribbon clip on the controller module. I am using some elctrical tape but this is certainly not the best solution but it does seem to be in place.
2) The controller module itself is somehow damaged. Has anyone heard of this happening? Is there a fuse on the module?
3) I have blown a fuse. Which fuse would it be?
4) The ribbon clip is broken. This is a brand new ribbon from www.playstationrepairs.co.uk so it shouldn't be that.
5) Something I have not considered.

What do you think it could be?

Possible Actions;

a) Buy a new controller module for £20 ($32) plus postage
b) Buy a second hand faulty ps2 for approx £20 and use the module
c) Get a pro to replace the fuse (if that could be the problem) and hope it doesn't cost to much.

I am pretty poor at the moment so I need to be careful with money. What should I do?

To confirm; PAL v5 console. Orig messiah chip. The PS2 fuctions fine other than the controller/memory not working.

The fuses diagrams in the FAQ tell you what the fuses do. The cable taped down? Nah - needs proper electrical contact. What can you do? take it to a pro.
