Anyone tried to replace a silver slimlime, from a wide laser to a pvr802w?

I got my first silver slimline return (first ever actually), with the wide laser not reading dvds. I got another 2 silver slimlines still in stock, one modded already and another untouched. I tried to replace the lasers (whole block) on all 3 of them, and on all 3 of them the spindle doesn't spin at all, although the heads still move. I thought I blew a fuse, checked that, they are intact.

After some messing around, I ended up just putting back the original wide lasers, and they are working fine on the 2 new ones. On the returned machine it still has the same behaviour, as expected. But with the original laser block, the disc spins and is working fine. With the 802w's the disc just won't spin. I even tried using the lenschanger software to no avail. I don't have any black PStwo's in stock, so I can't test on them to see if it's a silver only problem, but my guess it shouldn't.

So, has anyone replaced a laser on a silver slimline? are you getting the same problems? Maybe all 3 of the 802w's are defective?

Also. Is there supposed to be some anti-static solder blob that has to be removed? Because I've examined the whole block and I don't have a clue.

maybe the coils might be dead. I'm not sure but i have the same problem with my normal slim line. when i power on the laser head also moves but no disc spin. The head moves only in the beginning and them it does nothing like it doesn't see that there is a disc inside. It's a wide laser.

Burnt spindle coils on all 3 new laser blocks? Well I'm still at work right now. I'll remove the solder blob tonight and see how it does. If it still doesn't work guess I'll have to RMA all 3 of them.

Also found some linkage on where the solder blob is.

i mean it could be a burned out component on your motherboard. like a resistor or something.

Burnt out on all 3 machines? I have 3 machines, with 3 new laser blocks to replace. Like i said ealier, in the end I put the original wide lasers back in, and it works fine on the brand new machines, so I doubt it is the motherboard. Well we'll find out tonight when I remove the solder blob.

I heard you have to modify a part of the case to get the pvr to work. Plus you have to flash the eeprom of the slim ps2 in order to switch to the pvr kind. You can read more in the replacement pvr sticky thread.

Ok, Got back home and I removed the solder blob with some de-soldering braid. Yup, all is fine and working now.
