surely the fan on the ps2 and a fan directly above the chips with a 1cm clearance blowing air onto the chips is enough?

You could experiment, but I don't think it would be. As mentioned before, air not a great conductor of heat, in comparison to other items used for cooling.

yea. the heat wouldn't dissipate off the chip as well without a heatsink. you need the heatsink to help absorb the heat, and a fan to blow it away. without the heatsink, no heat is being absorbed from the chip.

    ok............
I got the actual heatsink block for the chips ripped out of the heatsink plate, can I use the thermal rubbnery stuff, and the heatsink block/cube plus the fan over that?

Yes, you can use the "rubbery stuff" and the heatsink, but you must clamp the heatsink and "rubbery stuff" onto the EE chip. You can't just lay it on without some pressure.

    /me hmmmmms
I dunno how I can do that, maybe a custom brace or something

Ahhh, I can put some string or fishing line (so you cant see it) thru the holes in the heatsink cube the tie that around the bottom of the board so it is held down.
But first of all I shall try the fan and rubber without the cube - if it works thenI'll keep it like that.

this reminds me of hardocp.com's water-cooled x-box (they were the first) . Just thought i'd say that.

Though i don't understand the point of taking out the heatsink and replacing it with a fan. The PS2's already noisy as it is. Plus, i like how the heatsinks look.
