I am trying to use a 15 watt Radio Shack soldering iron to remove some solder I put on the copper border surrounding the PS2 mainboard. The iron refuses to warm up the entire blob of solder. Is this because heat is dissapating out into the copper border as well? Should I try a higher watt Iron?

When I stick the desoldering braid to the blob, and the iron to the braid, the solder underneath won't melt. It's because I'm trying to heat up the whole copper border isn't it?

15w is not enough to heat up such a big surface
u should use at least a 30w iron

A good 15watt can remvo solder borders, just dont use the tip of the soldering iron but about the middle of the needle tip, place it ontop of the solder and add a slight amount of solder wayt for some of it to melt and remove it with a pump, repeet untill most of the solder is gone.

Also consider your soldering iron tip. Do you ever clean or tin it? If your tip looks dark or black, the crud on the surface will prevent the tip from transferring heat effectively. Try sanding it down or just putting a new tip in. Hope this helps.

Thx for the replies. The iron I'm using is a Radio Shack 15 Watt Soldering Pencil/Iron. I don't know if that qualifies as good.

I've got a sponge next to the iron, and wipe it off now and then. I'll replace the tip soon too.

When soldering the PS2, I use my trusty old RS 15W as well. Also use .022 solder.

After thinking about this, I agree. I have had trouble doing this with a 15W.
