i just removed the capacitor at the scex point of my v9.
the good news is, it does not reboot/crash anymore.

the bad news is, it still skips on reading dvd's (audio cd's seem to be fine).
the dvd player makes skipping noises. it will make the dvd spin, the skipping sounds occur, then it stops spinning, and the whole process will repeat again.

    odd stuff

    edit:
i'm using Ritec-G04 DVD-r discs, burned at 1x with K3b (Linux/GNU KDE burning tool). the copy used to work before i ****ed up with the scex point, also, original dvd's can't be read.

You should check your coils and LA and see if they are ok.
    Do original games work?

i checked my coils, using this diagram.

    coil1 gives me 5.3 Ohm
    coil2 gives me 4.9 Ohm

will check my LA chip tonight, after i find some information for making diagnostics on the chip

    edit:
there seem to be no solder splashes or other kinds of bridging on the LA chip. i also checked the fuses, they all seem to be fine. are there any other things i can do to check my LA-chip?

i just checked my LA chip.
seems like there are 3 pins shorted to the ground, besides the 2 big ones in the middle.

i start counting the pins from the side of the chip, closest to the grounded/golden edge of the board. the 7th pin (next to the big one) is shorted at the ground wire.
so are the 3rd and 4th on the other side (wich are next to PS11).

    is that good or bad?

U need to check the resistence on pins 18-19 and 20-21.
U sould get on both resolults something close to 122k.

If not the LA chip is dead!!!

ouch, guess the LA chip is dead.
i don't know wich number the pins have, but i measured all pins next to each other and the biggest resistance i measured was 36k Ohm.

i have had my matrix inifinity working, and played for just a few hours. how did the LA chip break? would be usefull to know so i can prevent it the next time.

and how can i fix this? can i buy that chip somewhere, and where can i see what version number the chip has so i buy the right one. i have an old v7, but that seems to have another LA-chip.

since the ps2 is still reading cd's i'm not giving up on the LA chip yet. i just read a few posts saying the LA chip should be fine if the coils have more then 4 Ohm resistance, and it can still read cd's.

i'll try to clean the laser now, and play around a bit with the pots.

    edit:
    it's no use.
i cleaned the laser and adjusted the DVD pot from 1.42k to 1.39k (in steps of 0.1k), without any result.

    a nice overview of the diagnostics so far;
my brand new v9 was modded with a matrix infinity (no romeo mod), and worked for a few hours.
(the media used is Ritec-G04 DVD-r)

then it stopped booting, so i took it apart and noticed the scex point was ****ed up. i removed the capacitor at the scex point and the modchip+wires, this made my ps2 boot again. there are no crashes, random reboots or whatsoever.

but it cannot read dvd's, neither dvd-r or original dvd. audio cd's are played fine. the dvd tray opens and closes like normal. when i insert a dvd, it starts spinning and slows down after a second or two already, making a high-toned noise. this repeats itself a few times, with occasional ticking noises in between.

    those are the diagnostics. i did the following checkups;
    -bios pins not shorted
-no random solder splashes on the board (cleaned the whole thing and looked it over with a magnifying glass)
-all fuses (PSxx) give me a resistance of nearly 0 Ohm
    -cleaned laser lens
    -tried adjusting the DVD-pot
-measured the coils, both are above 4,5 Ohm

only thing left i can imagine is that it is the LA-chip, but how on earth could that be dead already after a few hours of playing?

If it can reads audio & original cds, then it's not the LA chip.
It can be or the Laser len gone weak, or it can be someting on the board.
Or one of the FETS that on the left side of the ribbon cable (1 is for CD and one is for DVD) and it could be the RF AMP circuit.
