red screen of death on everything but dvd movies?
red screen of death on everything but dvd movies? –
i've checked and double-checked all the points and pins with both a magnifying glass and a multimeter.
i've tried original PS1 and PS2 games as well as a DVD+R PS2 game, getting the red screen. DVD movies (Evil Dead, heh) work just fine.
i haven't messed with the chip past installing it. does it need to be flashed first? it's a Matrix Infinity (yellow dot) in a V7.
update: i burned a bios disc and get a red screen when i try to load it.
What chip ??
What proccedure for movies ??
What version of PS2 ??
uh .. try reading my post. i specified the chip and my ps2 model.
movie procedure is normal - insert disc, hit play.
How fast are you burning the cd? Make sure you burn at 4x. It is possible that you got a homebrew Matrix Infinity that needs flashing.
the DVD+R was burned at 4x
the CD-R (with the Matrix Infinity 1.36 bios) was burned at 4x, and still gives me a red screen.
PS1 and PS2 originals give a red screen.
DVD movies continue to work normally.

well, the v1.36 bios CD that i burned at 4x still gives me a red screen. i put the disc in, turned off the ps2 power, turned on the ps2 power (reset = red), then held reset until (eject = blue) .. red screen.
dvd movies are giving me a DRE now
edit: i can hear the drive laser trying to read, but it doesn't sound quite right. could it have been moved accidentally during disassembly/reassembly?
What kind of wire did you use for 3.3v and Ground? Connect ground to the track that runs along the outside of the PS2 board if it will allow you to make a closer connection. Use either 22, 26, or double 30AWGs to connect 3.3 and Ground. When I have problems like you are describing, taking those measures usually clears it up.
Also, if you hold down Triangle and Circle at startup, do you get the Matrix config screen?
i used 20awg solid "hook-up" wire from Radio Shack for the 3.3 and Ground.
the ground is connected to the track with about 1.5" of wire.
by double, you mean 2 wires?
i don't get any sort of Matrix screen, logo, or anything else.
yes, 2 twisted wires.. sounds like you got the chip powered correctly.
I'd replace that chip with another matrix. If you don't even get the config screen, the chip isn't on/not working/isn't flashed.
