I have a v7 NTSC ps2. I installed a Magic 3.1 chip about a year ago, and it's worked pretty well until now.
My brother was playing a DVD+R copy of Front Mission 4 and he turned it off to go eat. When he came back, he turned on the PS2 and it no longer detects any DVD-R or DVD+R. Sometimes it takes a while, but just goes to the red screen. Everything else seems to work (originals, CDR, PS1 originals, PS1 cd-r, etc) but not DVD+R or DVD-R.
The PS2 really hasn't been used very much (I would estimate under 200 hours since I got it) and I've never watched any DVD movies on it so I find it strange that something like this would happen.
Can anyone help me?

yes, it does sound like a laser unit problem, try picking up a new laser unit from www.robotpig.com, you're V7 most likely ha a KHS-400C unit in it, but check it first.

Ok before you do anything check to make sure dvd " originals " boot. If dvd originals boot, great. If they do boot do the boot sluggish ? ex. games dont boot until the ps2 goes to the browser menu. If so the laser is getting weak or is dirty.

You should try read some instructiuons how to fix a laser otherwise you should buy a new one,but you must see that your ps2 plays all the original first

It's been a while but as far as I remember, all DVD originals booted straight away just like the day I got it...
