The real dead v9 answer is here!

We have sold many many consoles over the Christmas period and thankfully we have only had a hand full of consoles die.

However among some close friends we now know of a large amount of dead units in excess of 100 consoles reported in the New Year break.

The chips in these units are the following:
Messiah 2, 1.31 and 1.33B
Matirx MXL2
DMS3 v9 1.8 (Yes the DMS3 also!)

This has lead us to start our own testing on the dead v9 units.

We have found in every console we have looked at, the laser simply cannot find the groove and is continually trying to focus on the disk.

This has been proved by testing the LA608 chip which is responsible for the laser focusing and tracking.

There has now been 3 dead v9 consoles successfully repaired by replacing this chip and we will be making further repairs/tests tomorrow.

The question now is why have these LA chips been blowing?

Now why doesnt it affect other region PS2s? Even Aussy Pal Ps2s dont have the same faults being reported.
Must be something in the build quality of the Euro Pal V9 at fault?
A lot of people before Christmas have been reporting of the LA608 Chips not having heatpads. All V9 stations I have modded, HAVE had heatpads.

whats the position of the LA608 chip? Do u have a pic maybe.....

I don't have picture to hand but its the chip by the laser ribbon, next to the fuse PS11.

Dont use the vias points.
Solder the controller points on the top of the mainboard on the Prozessor.
Then will the DVD controllerchip not be damaged.
I have test it for a view weeks no trouble anymore.

The v9 problem has been confirmed on installations using the VIAs or the chip legs. It makes no difference.

so it's a tracking problem make's sense to me, and explain's the reason it's continually trying to focus it cant find the track it's sent ie the system.cnf which in turn point's to the elf.

now for a source of la chip's or a fix maybe it is faulty board's and the reason for v10 introduction.

another possibilty is the size of the heatpad used need's to be increased as charlie's post indicates using cdr/dvd-r media causes peaks that inturn will drive heat on the la.

I can backup 100% what 'techy' has said, as I changed one of these tonight also and it fixed the problem. I did also post some weeks ago that this was the case however with the intervention of 'whispering sands' input and losing track of what actually fixed the console, the 'solution' I thought I had found got lost along the way. The 1st console fixed was shipped back some time ago and I have only just recieved the 2nd console with this problem over the weekend. This is now obviously fixed.

As techy says we now need to know why these chips are becoming faulty.

Oh and lets try and keep this thread clean of the usual bickering and crap.

vias or pins dont make a bit of difference were talking pro installer's here not some fly by night's

did all the ones that needed repairing not have heatpads? If so, would it be worth adding a heatsink on?
