RaAAAGrrr Help me pick a modchip! –
I know you guys probably hate this question after being asked it for the past years over and over again. But... which stupid mod chip do I get!?
I'm an experienced electronics technician, installation won't be an issue but I'm having a hell of a time deciding on a unit to get. I have to say you guys really do some amazing installs (and some not so amazing) I've never seen anything close to the kinds of routing jobs you guys have done out in industry. Anyway.....
I have a v15 (also have a v4 with a dying laser which I don't want to mess with)
I was looking at either the DMS4 S.E. or an MI Green Dot. The DMS currently does not have an install diag for any of the v15s. ToxicOS looked rather interesting but since I can't do a HD Combo mod (which I'm rather sad about) whats the point. The MI sounds like a very solid chip with official firmware, seems to have the best rep, and has an install diag for my version. I would like to be able to at least still use my ARMax and some sort of media player .elf app, and play backups of course.
Am I going down the right path trying to decide between these 2? If so, which would be the best for me and if not, is there another chip that might beter suit my needs?
Also any word on HDCombo for a v15?
Go with Matrix Infinity. Dont use DMS, it just plain sucks. Since your laser is dying, get a USB drive and set the Infinity to DEV1 so that you can play games from USBAdvance. No HDCombo for V14+, $ony removed it outright from those systems.
Are there any reasons I should consider a Crystal Chip or modbo over the MI?
On the V4 with the laser issue, I would get any chip which has a DEV mode (Matrix, DMS, Crystal, DUO 3 GOLD, except Modbo 745 doesn't work on V4, ). And then get a hard drive and the PS2 network adapter. This way you can play your games using HDloader 8b and you don't have to worry about the laser.
On the v15 either a matrix or a crystal since they have the best compatability on those models. I haven't tried a modbo or any other clone on those models so I don't know how good they work. Anyone know how well the clones work on a V15?
I've been drooling over your HDCombo mods, EJM. I'm contemplating returning this v15 and getting a v12 from a RadioShack I used to work at that has them bundled with two terrible games and some accessories for a $50 premium.
Which would mean:
$180 v12 PStwo
$50 MI Green Dot w/ NeoFix
$70 HDCombo (unless anyone knows where to get this on the cheap?)
$?? for whatever HD I decide on
Or I can work on the v4, which again has a failing laser that only works after many repeated resets, and has a problem with its A/V port. S-video has a tendency to flicker on this unit. These two problems were the reason I grabbed a new slim in the first place but now I'd like to enjoy some mods. I may be able to fix these issues but the HDCombo is a really nice looking unit. But anyway.. if I went this way I would only need:
$40 MI Green Dot chip only
$?? Ethernet adapter (where would you guys buy this?)
But either way sounds like Matrix is the chip of choice?
Thanks for all the advice guys. I really value your opinions. Excuse me if I'm writing long posts half of this is getting my thoughts written out, I'd really like to enjoy this system for a while.
The Ps2 network adapter can be gotten at any used video game store or the internet. They run about $20.
The hard drive depends on how much you are willing to spend. Keep in mind most PS2 games average 2.5 GB so it also depends on how many games you plan on putting on there.
My choice by far is the crystal chip 2 pro.
Just went online with the chip enabled with no problems at all.
