I recently bought a used PS2 and knowtice that it will play all my burnt/backup DvD movies without a modchip , Should it do this by default or does it already have a modchip inside?
Also is it ok to use +/-RW to make PS2 backups or should I stick to +/-R?

All PS2's will play all DVD Movies (including copies)... by default. There is no chip installed.

When possible, use -R's first, then +R's. Try to avoid RW's... a little too tough for lasers to effectively read.

sweet , I thought I needed to add a chip to watch my backup DvD's ,
    one last thing ,
I have a Duo 2 Se and I know a guy that is an electrician and does alot of work soldering things to other things (it's his job) to install the chip for me but hasn't done it before , should I let him do it (for free or very cheap) and give him all the links for the install / romeo mod , or should I go with someone with less soldering experience but more PS2 modding exp ?

I love opinion questions... cause I've always got one.

If this guy has never soldered a PS2 board before, he wouldn't get within 15' of my console. Soldering a PS2 board is like nothing else. An electrician doesn't solder anything like it.

You have an advantage... you know this guy. IF he screws it up, no doubt he'll step up and replace it for ya. That's the only reason I'd say to go with him.

He does alot of VCR/DVD/Sat Reciever repairs among the various other things they repair and solder up , I might get him to do it or look around my city for someone who does , sigh , its such a tough decision because the last thing I want is to blow 170$ (PS2+Chip) and have the thing cooked

I got a few PM's from a guy at the DMS website about 6 months ago wanting his and his friends PS2's modded with the DMS3s that they had. At the last minute one of his friends found a local electronic repair shop that would do the work for less, even though he'd never done it before.

Out of the 3 PS2's they gave him to mod:
1 motherboard was ruined by soldering the pins on the DVD chip together at the feet of the legs.
1 motherboard was ruined by sinking the vias into the board
On the first PS2 he took apart he broke the reset/eject ribbon and bent the cooling plate on the underside of the board trying to pry it apart not seeing that one of the plates was hooked to the mobo.
And on the third PS2 he didnt know what he did wrong, the chip didnt work and the PS2 acted as if there was no chip.

The electronics repair shop denied the owners full compensation for their consoles stating that the parts they broke did not constitute buying them new systems. They would only agree to payment of $100 for the broken motherboards, and $15 for the ribbon, prices they found on the internet from a random site.

After it was all over, they had worthless PS2's and lost interest in the modding community. Never heared from him again or saw him up on the console sites.

The lessons they learned the hard way, and what so many people need to know about modding these systems is that it's not all about soldering skills, knowledge of electronics, or patience. Its the combination of these things combined with knowledge the particular chips and the PS2. What works for one chip may not work for another. You need to know what tricks to use and how to troubleshoot (alternate points, short/thicker power and GND wire on the more powerful chips, areas of the board to stay away from, twisting wires with a grounded one for less interference, etc.) I find it unbelievable that some guy thats never worked on these to welcome the idea of charging someone to do it. Or worse, sending your ps2 to its death trying to save a buck.

If you really want your PS2 modded, save yourself the trouble and send/take it to a modder. These forums are here to help.

tjtownz: great story, and how many others I have heard.... but they are "experts" as they know how to solder to a half inch soldering point... Good luck with a PS2, and the result will be a DEAD one, which we can buy/repair for some sum, hehe...

    regards, Stephen

these types of stories scare me into just wanting to get a flip top and use hddloader or something...
I figure I will find a local that can mod it (and has done many of them) or ship it to someone on the forums (someone close to me here in Nova Scotia Canada , who will replace my ps2 if they snap it into pieces)

A modder, will stand by his work and know what to do and what not to do. These stories aren't to scare you but you let you know that they aren't that easy to do. On the other hand...it's pretty hard to destroy the mother board. I've made mistakes before and I've never destroyed a board yet. To a modder, modding a ps2 is totally easy, and they can do it with confidence. Do enough of them...it's almost second nature sometimes, lol. Anyhow, if you want to waste your money and time on a flip top, that's fine. Either way, you'll achieve your goal.
