Question about Swapping broken ps2 slim

My buddy swapped an old ps2 for another old style ps2 when he ****ed up the chip install, and the store said they can't take it back because it has been tampered with. My question is, is this all they can say or can they get you arrested/fined/charged for doing it. I personally am AGAINST it but I am just wondering.
