Q about modding my v4 ps2
Q about modding my v4 ps2 –

Hi all, I'm a relative newbie to this, but I have a little experience with dvd and dc backups. I have been reading all of the info I can on modding ps2's and have not been able to narrow down a mod that is right for me. I have seen the fliptops with disc swapping boot methods, messiah 2s, dms3's, and the other less functional mods. My question is which mod should I go with? I have a v4 ps2, and I am debating modding it or ordering a newer version 9 or 10 premodded from one of the many suppliers. I need NTSC if that makes a difference. I have found that my ps2 will read DVD+Rs because that is what I use to make and backup my dvd's. I don't know if my computer setup and the programs I backup with make any difference in which mod I should get either, so any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help.

V1-V4 are very picky on the disc, I found that Ritek G03 and G04 are the best for these versions. No matter which chip you put in there, if you get worn out laser, the expensive chip won't even help you anything. Unless you replace the 400C laser, it would read on some cheap brand discs (Accu, Ritek....etc) even you have a chip magic 3.1 ($9)
V5-V10 have new laser, so it 's not a problem on the discs. You can get any chip you like. I still refer magic 3.1, however magic 3.1 is not working for V9-V10, you need Magic V something.
My advise to you is think before you mod. Don't spend $60 on the chip then the next problem is your laser doesn't read some brand discs which you need to change the new laser. It may cost you the same as a premodded.
Good Luck

get a dms3 v10 premod.. make sure the seller has at least a 90 day warranty.

Ok, my question about going with a newer version modded playstation is will they be able to read DVD+R discs since that is the type of burner I have. I don't want to have to buy another burner and a ps2 and mod chip if I don't need to. I know that my current v4 ps2 will read DVD+R, whereas I have read that most ps2's will only read DVD-R.

I read that PS2s v5 and up have better lasers, I have a v5 NTSC and it can read DVD+RWs (at least Memorex, haven't tried others) but I use DVD-Rs. So I've no doubt that most new post-v4 PS2s can read DVD+Rs just fine.
