Trying to find some information for a buddy about modchipping the PSX (Jap PS2 with DVR). I;ve have scoured google and only read rumours of a Memory Stick called 'VAST' which seemed like vapourware...

Is there anyway to mod these gorgeous machines?

    Hi!

Only one modchip supports this machine.
But i forget the name of it... Too long ago.

    Maybe fmcb will work.
    That would be interesting!

Are you talking about the Ghost 2 chip? I haven't found an install guide for it yet.

There was a user a few years ago on here who was in the middle of attempting to use a NTSC-J PS2 to create the FMCB files for use on the PSX, however the thread died on the fifth page. (I have PMed the user so heres hoping)

If I remember right, the MC-KELFs are differently encrypted on those models...

FMCB 1.8b seems to be somewhat ready, but in cases like this it is pretty much in the beginning-stages...
The recent PS3-Developments might bring us something good, but not sure about it...

Yes, the 'Ghost2' is the only I heard of, which should work in this 'DESR's.
Who wants to hardmod a 'PSX' anyway/at all?

Can you please elaborate, what you mean by that?

I thought there was a difference about xor'ing on retail-PS2s and that on DESRs (the same for some other PS2-Types, I think debug-unitsfor example...).

In the past months the epic fail of zony shows massive movement on different platforms.

So if ps3 and psp are open why should be no movement in the ps2 section?
    Because nobody talks about here?

Most of the secrets of the PS2 have already been discovered, as Sony didn't really encrypt everything there was in the ROM of the PS2s.

(Their method of keeping their consoles hack-proof in those days was just plain obscurity. )

Anything else that's unknown about the PS2 will require low-level hacking of the hardware, or just reverse engineering of Sony's modules.

FYI the PS2 doesn't use any of those keys used by the PS3 and PSP, with the possible exception of the Magicgate key(s).

@OP: If I may say this: I really think that you should not modify that PSX.
It's really a rare and valuable console, and modifying it would be like......

Unless you really don't mind losing something precious.

Aha, do you mean that or do you know that?
