Is there some sort of test out there to preform to the V12 PStwo to see if the laser fails before spending all the cash on a mod and install? All I have now is a rented copy of GTA:SA. Should I try some movies?

Just throw that game you have in it... if it fires up a dvd-based game, you're good to go. A movie might be a good second test, but not necessary.
I would think a backup of a movie on dvd-r would be a good test - as you don't need a modchip to boot it, and it will test the laser's ability to also read backups. This could be used on all versions of PS2s.
We use a PS2 Backup on DVD-R and CD-R.
If the RSOD comes quickly, then the laser is OK.
After that let et play a DVD-R movie.

I tested without modchip pstwo 17 dvd-r dvd movie nothing laser fry and mechacon crash. When I put ps2 original demo disc after 30 minute demo show freezed and sound is beeped.Immedieatly I plug off power cord thank god; laser is not fry.
hmm... looks like only the games cause the mechacon crash?
