PS2 version

I was wondering how can I tell what version of PS2 I have, and also what mod chip I have. The model # is 30001 no R after it, serial number is U33xxxxx, and the date code is 1A. The mod chip I have is an external one that has a cord that plugs into the USB port, the unit has a blue see thru case. Can anyone help? Also with this chip can I play back-ups (CD ROMS/DVD ROM)? Or do I have to invest into a different mod chip? If so which one?
