ps2 no longer reads anything
Ok, here's the deal. I installed a magic 3 into a v5 pal system a while ago. The install didn't work properly and i discovered that i'd foolishly soldered the 's' point to the wrong end of the little ditty that its supposed to hook up to. After fixing that up, i tried booting the ps2 but it no longer read any disks, not even originals. Cd's don't even spin. They just do about 5, 1/4 turns and then stop. Dvd's actually spin up for about a minute or so then stop. The ps2 just loads up to the standard screen as if no disk was in the drive. When i go into the browser, i eventually get a disk read error. There are no abnormal noises coming from the drive either. From what i've read the give away for a dead laser is lots of clicking noises, so i've suspected something other than a dead laser.
I backed out of the install and still the same problem. I checked all points to make sure nothing was bridged, and checked all ribbon cables, but all seemed fine. I also spent hours looking over the board for loose solder with a magnifying glass but found none. Checked all fuses but the are all good. Cleaned the lense with a lense cleaning cd and have adjusted laser pots, cog, and azimuth. Nothing is helping!
Does anyone have any other ideas? Could i have killed something on the mobo thanks to my bungled 's' point? Could it be a dead laser? What about the BA chips? Could one of these be dead? How can i tell if they are good or bad?
I'm trying to get my hands on another v5 dvd drive to try out, but until then any other suggestions would be good.
One more question, do i need to get a dvd drive out of another v5, or could i use one out of a v2, or v7?
