Modded a V7, when I turn on from cold and insert any disk (original/backup) the laser tries to read it with a fairly high pitch screeching!! So I take disc out wait 4/5mins then put in any disk and all is well, the ps2 then plays anything flawlessly for hours on end!!!

    Any ideas??

not real sure, I've heard some v4, v5 have that same kind of problem, try adjusting the laser.

Maybe give it a quick blow with a hairdryer before, this way it might just boot straight away instead of having to wait 4/5 mins..

That's what i do with my nitro rc car.

    PS2's... alot like nitro engines!

Oh I was going to say that, I love when you clean the system & see that thing like a chu-chu train going up (I love that sound ttissz ttissz, on the real drag racers)...

By the way the nitro haven't blow anything on the engine?
(I wonder how much $ you invested in tires & body kits ect., if you're for real with the hobby)
