PS2 boot CD media, but not DVD
PS2 boot CD media, but not DVD –
01-09-2003,08:05 AM
I got this PS2 to repair after a Ripper mod was installed by someone else.
Everything seems fine, except it won't accept DVD media (originals, backups, movies) since it has been modded.
This behavior persists even after the modchip removal.
Any idea?

Try a quick azimuth adjustment. If the azimuth is mis-adjusted, it can cause the console to read one type of media but not the other. If that doesn't work, I would suspect the DVD diode has died. Remember, there are two different diodes in the laser assembly....one for CD and one for DVD. It is entirely possible for one to go out while the other continues to function normally, thus, only allowing you to play one type of media.

Thx for the quick reply.
I was suspecting this kind of problem
Did the modchip kill the diode or is it the result of a misinstall (solder splash ...)
I mean: can I safely reuse the Ripper on another PS2 or is it better to discard it?

What version of console? If it is an older console, the laser diode could have just given up from age. Did it work fine before the chip install? Maybe just a coincidence. I haven't ever heard anything about that chip itself causing the laser to die, so I highly doubt that as the cause. Who installed it? Did the installer adjust any of the laser pots? Mis-adjusting the laser pots will kill the laser. There are two differenet pots available for adjustment...on CD on DVD. Possibly the DVD pot was mis-adjusted and the result was a dead DVD diode. Possibly a mis-install as well...however, seems unlikely that just the DVD diode went if it was a mis-install. It is possible, though.

It's a V5.
Install seems ok except the use of thick wire ribbons.
No apparent bridges or splashes though.
Both pots are higher than 1.2 K. Going down is of no use anyway.
The PS2 stopped reading DVD right after the install and the installer seems to be suddenly unreachable
The prob is similar to this one: http://www.ps2newz.net/forums/showth...&threadid=2335

Maybe just coincidence, then. However, since you can't contact the intaller, you have no way of knowing what was done in terms of laser adjustments. Did you ever get DVD running or did it come back from the installer with the problem? If it came back that way, only suggestion is to send it back to the installer and tell them to fix it (obviously difficult to do if you can't find them). I think you are going to have to replace the laser, though.

Came back that way. Never got a DVD running.
I'll try swapping lasers with another PS2.
Thx for the help
