Hi,
Is there any way to identify a PS2 BIOS version (GAP, No-GAP) without opening the unit? The serial, datecode etc is not enough?
Thanks.

depends on the model. I made a mistake, because my model number was SCPH-30001 R. I assumed it was a type v5/v6, but it turned out to be a v/4 no gap. I could have figured this out by looking in the expansion bay, for 2 sets of screws, but I determined if from openning it up and comparing to diagrams on china-magic.com. Most of the mod chip sellers have tips on their site for figuring it out.
For me the final verification came down to talking to the guys as modchip.ca. I would get your model number and date code ready, and shoot them an e-mail, or see if you can figure it out from their diagrams/info. They have the nice, red, original magic 2's. If you are in the US/canada, for an extra $6 (US), you can get it overnight. Plus they send you wires and solder with your order.
Some models are easier to tell than others. Mine was a little more annoying than telling a v5/6/7.
