    Hi y'all,

I havent really reading up or dealing with ps2's long. I tried to mod one (and ****ed it up, my fault of course) but looking at the setup the ps2 uses inside it - how flimsy and weak the components are and how many ribbon connections the dvd drive uses, the laser been so fragile etc. etc. i cant help but ask is the ps2 badly designed?

Well remember. These along with all consumer grade electronics are not meant to be opened nor messed with. Just used untill they break, then thrown away and bought anew.

consumer electronics these days are typically made with an expected lifespan for what the company considers "normal" use. and then as already stated, be thrown away later.

besides, except for the laser going out, it doesnt matter how flimsy the ribbon cables are as they're quite secure. also, the drive in a ps2 is NOT ide which is why the controller chips and other drive electronics are on the motherboard and not integrated into the drive(ide stands for integrated drive electronics btw) and require multiple ribbon cables. it's not as if it was ever meant to be upgraded like a pc, and it probably also saved them some cash in the longrun instead of using off the shelf hardware like the xbox(which is a good thing for the consumer because it means they dont have any reason to be hesitant if they ever need to drop the price further due to competition).

ps2's arent meant to be opened, let alone maintained or upgraded, and especially modded.

the v1-3 ps2's were badly designed internally(on a matter of manufacturing costs. wtf were they thinking with 2 boards...), aside from those it's a matter of cost and the fact that the consumer is never expected to consider opening the unit.

and i know what you mean about the atari, but you gotta realize that the atari was also completely solidstate. most odl cartidge systems will still work if you dont kick them around or spill crap on 'em. even the original nes usually works fine except for the cartidge mechanism breaking and not working properly, which is a mechanical component just like the optical drive in modern consoles anyway.

yup, ps2 works perfectly with originals, unfortunately IMO ps2 is a BITCH to mod if you expect to play all backups like originals...but that's just me it works 100% for most people, I on the other hand have never had a perfectly working ps2

what 20 year old phillips tv principle? do you mean them lasting for a while? tv's solid state electronics, just like an old atari. they arent mechanical.(well, except for the buttons, but i mean come on, they're buttons). if you mean the tv wearing out after 20 years, crts just dont last forever. if you mean that phillips at some point said they expected their tv's to last 20 years, until recently there havent been many advancements in consumer tv technology(and werent for decades aside from better tuners and flat screen tubes).

your statement was a little vague there.

The ps2's components are weak, I agree with that, indeed. Since I play so many backups on my ps2, to boot a backup HK silver, it'll show the browser/system config menu for about 10 seconds until it boots them, though alot of other different types of HK silver still boot fine...
But in any case, the ps2's components are cheap and I guess it is badly designed.

True ps2 is so weakly built, it the same with the crap lasers in psx when it came out and then change change change, ps2 has crap lasers and crappy ribbons inside.

Xbox for examle hasn't had anyof this hastle when modding!!, but then again i always seem to go back to my ps2!?!?

this is the best way to explain it you go to an auction they generally have tv's for sale and shown working you will guarentee you will see old philips even sony tv's with old shitty wooden surround working without a problem.

then you get to the new modern tv's that aint turned on and dont work. bad explanation i know.

look at ashing machines from the 80s still kicking about now you buy one now life expectancy is 5 years for white kitchen appliances.

electronics mechanics has got weaker in my opinion.

it's not a fact that the new electronics have more technology they have less components than there older counterparts and less to go wrong bad design i guess or just companys these day's take in shortcut's.

and every electronic part is mechanical if it didnt have forward motion movement it wouldnt work so physical mechanics and electrical mechanics can both break down on the same principal of wareing out through movement.
