problem with magic 3.1 install
problem with magic 3.1 install –
Hi, I'm trying to install a magic 3.1 on my v5 ps2 with a chip clip v2.10. After the install, there seems to be no laser activity, no matter what type of cd/dvd I put in, it goes to the NO DATA screen and I don't hear the laser trying to read it. Could it be a problem with the 5v, ground wires? I used the ones attached to the clip but they aren't any bigger than the other wires.. or does it sound like something else? Also, does anyone know exactly how to test the bios clip? I used the continuity tester to check at all the labeled points and it seemed ok.. is that all I need to check for? Thanks..

Your 5v and ground need to be a larger wire to support the current. So I would try to use a larger wire. And make sure the soldering poinst are done well. This issue you are having deffinatly sounds like a ground issue.

Hi thanks for your help, is it ok to just add a thicker wire in addition to what I've soldered? or should I remove the thin one connected to the clip altogether? thanks.
lazer not moving –
if you lazer is not moving and you have the no data screen then take your ps2 back apart...its a pain i know....and make sure the yellow cable is connected properly to the lazers eye....the thing that moves back and forth.....even if it looks connected as soon as it goes to pull the lazer it comes off so i bet thats your problem make sure thats properly connected and this should give you some kind of lazer movement and data.....hope that helps
you may want to add a second ground wire and a larger 5V wire
I also had this problem on a install, Check the flat ribbon cable between the laser and the mother board. to see if it is inserted all the way. I wasn't very lucky when mine wasn't , I don't know how but It took out my dvd side of the laser, Had to install new laser.
I now use a sharpie marker to draw a line against the connector and the cable before I remove the cable. Now when I reinstall the laser I can confirm that I inserted the cable enough by not seeing a gap in my mark to the connector.
We learn by our mistakes!
Hi, I checked the cables again and you were right, one was loose and the other had come out completely.. this seemed to fix the problem at least for my original cd and burned cd-r's. But dvd originals not working and I don't have any dvd-r's to test.. but I will try that alternate 'W' point that many have talked about. Thanks a lot for your help, really appreciate it.
hello again, I tried using the alternate W point but it was the same still. So right now ps2 CD backups rips and originals work. And it doesn't seem like any sort of DVD backup or originals, or movies work. Any ideas? Thanks.
1. boot a DVD games using the "disable mode" (same as ps1 mod but held reset over 5 sec.. ) if dvd game boots .. laser is fine.. if not .. well ..there's the prob..
2. if laser is ok .. check point a, b, c, d, e, g , h .. any one of these in wrong solder pad ? .. or any two of them switched ? ..
just want to make sure this is correct, hold reset for 5+ secs while in standby mode.. as soon as I press down the reset button the system comes on.. and I continue to hold it. i tried this, but still couldn't get the dvd originals to work.. I wanted to try uninstalling the modchip and trying just to see if laser is okay.. would unplugging the 2 clips (I'm using the clip kit) from the magic chip be essentially disconnecting it? Thanks.
