Problem with laser or modchip?

I installed a DMS4 S.E Lite on a v14 PSTwo the other day, flashed with toxic 1.4 bios and it played backups/originals perfectly fine. But now for some reason all that it wants to play is CD's, with any DVD media (originals or backups or movies) the ps2 just makes a clicking sound and/or stays on the menu screen.

I've checked the solder points with a multimeter and all connections seem to be fine. I've also disabled the chip and tried playing an original game, but it still wont play. Does this mean it's definetley the laser if an original will not play when the chip is disabled?

Sounds like it is the laser, to be 100% sure uninstall the chip. An unmodded Ps2 will still play DVD-R movies.

yes agreeded remove everything and test. If no good suspect the laser

Thanks for the quick responses, I forgot to say that the laser still moves and tries to read the DVD games, but if this makes no difference i'll take the chip out and test. cheers

Sound exactly like the symptoms my PS2 had.
Reads only CDs, no DVDs, clicking sounds...
Was a blown laser. But the new one I got is 10x better than the original laser.
