  1. #1 Problem Booting DVD-R backups on my ps2 (Version 4)
    SailorDeath Guest
I got a solderless modchip, and I can get it to boot everything fine except for my DVD-R backups.

At first I thought it was the type of DVD-R I was using, or that I may need to recaibrate the laser, but I put in a dvd movie I compiled into the ps2 and it plays that without any problems, and my backups are on the same brand of DVD-R that my movie was burned to (so I know the ps2 can read it.)

When I follow the instructions on how to boot dvd-r backups it says I need to first insert a dvd original with a TOC larger than the backup at the game shark main menu. So I press the eject as I would normally, put the original in, press eject again to close the tray, and then wait the 30 seconds that the instructions tell me to do, then go into start game, select without codes, then swap the disc by holding in the eject button and switch the discs, then hitting x as soon as the try closes. Now when I do the swap the original DVD is still spinning inside the ps2 when it comes out, I think that's the problem, is the disc supposed to be stopped when I do the swap (I'd assume so because if it continually comes out spinning then it'll damage the original by scratching. I checked my Gameshark2, and it says that it's a version 2.1 and the site I got mine from says I need a gameshark2 version 1.93 is that a problem or am I doing something wrong. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Definitely sounds like a gameshark problem. I have both the 1.93 and the 2.0 and I could only boot dvd-r's with the v.1.93
The disc should not be spinning as its ejecting out. Your boot method sounds right otherwise.

I guess my next question should be then is how do I find a 1.93, or would I be better off getting a swap magic. TO be honest, I'm just thinking about buying the NH3, from here:

$10 us, and boots everything, sounds a little too good to be true, but hell I'd be paying more if I bought the Swap Magic boot discs, (since they're $20)

I have a 2.0 or 2.1 I believe, and I can boot DVD-R's just fine, here is the needed method on one's that are newer than 1.93 i think:
    Insert GS Disc 1
Make a new code called DVD-R or something you'll remember
    make the code all zeros

    Now for the boot method

    -Insert GS Disc 1
-When the main menu appears, REGULAR EJECT the GS with a DVD game with a TOC bigger than the game you are trying to play
-Go to the DVD-R code and check or uncheck that code, depending on what it was at (THIS IS IMPORTANT)
-Make sure about 30 sec to a minute has passed by by this time for the drive to recognize the DVD original game
    -Go to Start Game
    -Choose WITH CODES
-When the insert game notification appears, press X then IMMEDIATELY when the Loading please wait box pops up press and hold the eject button and the game will come out, swap it with your DVD-R
    -Enjoy!

As far as getting that NH mod I believe there is a thread on this forum concerning that. It says that it is made by the messiah team but If I remember right it is a magic 3 clone. I might be wrong on that so if I am can someone correct me.

To swap DVD's with GS2 after 1.93, you have to do the second swap AFTER activiting/deactiviating a cheat code, then starting "With Codes" and perform the second swap while the "Updating Codes" screen is displayed.

An alternative is to get a set of swap-discs. With the DVD Swap disc (4.35 TOC) I get the "Insert Disc " screen for swapping DVDR about 25 seconds after I insert the SwapDisc. The CD Disc takes a little longer to load, but they are both much easier to use for the PS2 boots. The only catch to the SwapDiscs is the DVD disc may not reliably run games with a TOC over 4.35GB (Devil May Cry--4.37GB) and a AR2/GS2 Double Swap would be required--unless you don't mind ejecting a spinning disc!

The fastest way I got my v2.11 GS2 to boot is this:

Boot GS2, after "codes load" and the main screen is displayed ("Start Game") normal eject and swap in Devil May Cry DVD Original. While it's loading the TOC, arrow down to "Gameshark Codes". Hit the "x" button 4 times to navigate through the menus to select a game and then select/deselect your "dummy" cheat (or game cheats you want to use). Note: The last game and cheat(s) you used are automatically reselected the next time you load the GS2, so you don't have to keep scrolling through the lists. Then hit the controller's "Start" to go directly to the Start game menu, then hit "x" button twice to "Start Game" "With Codes"--a third tap on "x" will start the "Updating Code List" routine and you can swap the original for the backup then. You have about a 25 second window to get the swap in, so you don't have to kill yourself to get to the eject button, but don't wait too long, or the disc may not get back in fast enough to load. This works flawlessly so long as you wait until the "Updating Codes" screen to swap in the backup, and you don't wait too long to do the second swap.

    Good Luck!

I have G.S. 1.93 and trumpetguyscw's method is how I used to boot DVD-r's on my Solder-less chip on my Version 4 PS2.

Can anyone confirm whether or not the GS2 2.21 (.21 is the key) is able to boot DVDR's? Also, does the SwapMagic DVD work with a US v1 console?
