Well im stumped, I modded a v7 with smartchip/bluechip and it was working fine, then the customer was trying to get dvd movies to boot and i guess he kept tapping the reset button real fast and then the ps2 wasnt working correctly anymore.. So he shipped it back to me and i took a look at it. Ps2 powers on normally but when you hit the reset button the eject light, lights up for a split second then turns off, eject does not work nor does the spinning motion of the dvd drive. I replaced 1 fuse and removed the modchip but i still have the same problem. I have found no bridges or solder balls anywhere using my 8x mag light. Any insight on this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

check pin 8 on the BA58 chip, connect one end of the multimeter/continuity check to pin 8 on that chip and the other end to ground (outer orange border). If you get a reading, then its blown, if not, then the BA chip is fine. But yes, it does sound like ba5851fm has blown

thats not always the case it's an unreliable test if it does test to ground then yeah its blown, but other things can go wrong with the ba where this test prove's nothing.

I hope you have access to a IC desoldering tool - else removing the chip safely and replacing it without destroying the tracks or lifting the pads will be hard...

On 4 pin per side IC's you can just drop a big glob of solder across each side and heat alternate sides until the chip comes free - but this can cause heat damage...

On a big chip like this you can lift individual legs one at a time with a pin - but then when you get to those big ground pads in the middle... good luck...

And then it may end up being a CD/DVD controller problem instead...
