Possible modchip failure?

I have a V1 or V2 PS2. It has a Messiah 2 in it, but I'm not sure what version it is... Here is a summery of my problems with my PS2 at the moment...

When my modchip is connected:
-- Games on HDLoader only boot 1 out of 10 times or so (when it does boot, they play perfect)
-- HDLoader cannot install games off of DVDr (it recognizes them as DVDr and not real discs)
-- Metal Gear Solid 3 doesn't boot off of DVDr - black screen
-- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas attempts to boot, but eventually fails
-- Star Ocean 3 has random freezes reading data - but will recover and continue playing normally


When my modchip is disconnected:
-- Games on HDLoader boot perfectly
-- Metal Gear Solid 3 original boots fine

I forgot to test the originals with my mod connected though, and don't really want to reconnect it if I don't have to...

I tried replacing my DVDRom as I thought maybe that was failing, but all the symptoms are still as present as ever. I don't think its a problem reading my DVDr discs though as other games (La Pucelle Tactics for example) would work fine...

Anyways, I'm now thinking my mod is shot, but I don't want to spend any more money on this thing when I'm not sure... Has anyone had similer problems??

Man from personal experience there is no easy to tell for sure when a chip has gone bad.I had encoutered also very obsure and unprecedented sympoms in some DMS3 chips that made me almost crazy.In exemple it booted a DVD-R only when there was no memory card of controller ejected and to boot Cd-r it required a ps1 memory in slot2.(I am not joking....)Yours also seem like crazy behavior.I finally tossed them away and regained my peace.I suggest you do the same.Check for the Ps2 first,the lens,the condition in general,try to remove the chip and see what it acts ok and if its not a console problem go buy a new chip they are not as expensive as a shrink...
.Also it would help to post what caused your ps2 to behave abnormaly in the first place

It's been behaving strange since I put the network adapter and harddrive in it, but I don't think that alone caused the problem. Like I said when I remove power from the modchip the HDLoader works fine... Also even with the mod powered up, it works fine one I get it to boot...
