i opened up my ps2 beacuse i wanted to take a look at the install points for a solder modchip. (they are so small btw) when i put everything back together it doesnt recognize any discs! boots striaght to browser(eject and reset buttons/leds still work though.) i inadvertantly removed the cd drive's ribbon cable (the one underneath everything) i put it back (pulled out that brown piece of plastic, inserted the ribbon, and pushed the plastic back in.) i'm pretty sure the connection is sound. once this ribbon is removed it cant be reinstalled or something?!?! please help me! ps2newz is the best thanks.

you did not push the ribbon in corrctly it will be on a slight angle reinsert it everything will be fine.

thanks for the encouragement entity (i know u are the modding man on these forums) but i reinserted it so many times! still no go
also, i figured out that its easier to put the ribbon cable in on the drive first then attach that cable to the mobo. i tried and tried. could it be anything else? (doesnt seem like it could be) so could i have damaged the ribbon cable?!

it could be a fuse that has blown because of the ribbon has been put in on an angle but its rare for this to happen but is a possibility also as you said you could have damaged the ribbon cable i just read your new information i would go on the basis that the ribbon is damaged or another cable is loose beside the main laser cable check all cables to the drive .

also there are only four cables going to the drive- the laser assembly cable (on underside) and the three ables on the side, im not missing one or something right?

i would not worry about fuses just yet i would make sure all the ribbon cables are correctly seated in place bit to test the fuses you are going to need a multimeter of some sort a crude one can be made using and led and a battery.
