Please help with magic4 in PS2 v4 and v5

hi there, i just installed two magic 4 in a PS2 ver4,5/6, anyhow the ver 5/6 boots dvdr games and movies just fine but not original movies at all,.. on to the ver4, the ver4 turns on and all but it wont boot any games or movies at all, could anyone please give me some idea as to what is wrong, whats a good way to test if the laser is dead,.. i have a Apple2 but am not sure if its dead or not, is there a way for me find out if its dead or not,..

why not just uninstall the chip and try originals on the ps2?
