  1. #1 Please help.. Burnt out chip legs?!?!
    s15 Guest
Hi, I tried to resolder my V9 chip legs today, but now the solder isn't sticking to them?! is it possible for these legs to burn from too much soldering, and thus form a coating or something preventing the solder from sticking to them?!?.. cos I did have a bit of an accident with a solder blob, and took a while to remove it fully.. but i'm not sure whether this may have caused excessive heat on the chip legs.. will using flux help? I'm stumped as no matter what I try the solder WONT stick anymore.. even when I try to tin the chip legs themself!..

use either a small peice of sandpaper to remove the built up plaque that's stopping you from soldering or a fibre glass pen if you have neither be gentle and scrape the plaque off.

    plaque

    Two things:
    1) When you re-heat over and over solder it looses its' "desire" to melt as easily and you need to progressively use greater temperatures to get it to the molten state required to bond wire to legs.

    2) Most solders are resin cored. This resin (or plaque as ent called it ) can contaminate the solder point as it commonly does with vias to the point that getting the solder to bond is near impossible.

best bet is to do as suggested and gently scrape the points you want to solder to - I would use a razor in preference to sandpaper.

Thank you very much!!!.. phew.. thought I was a bit doomed there for a second.. so I should also use new wires that are freshly tinned as opposed to the ones already there huh?

Ok now I think I may have well and truly F*CKED it ...i tried scraping, and still it's not sticking ... after numerous attempts at heating the legs/solder/wire it seems that the area around the legs is burnt/darkish and u can't really see the solder pads that they're attached to underneath. not to mention the scraping seems to have "worn" away much of the leg LOL... dunno if I can salvage it... sigh...
