Anybody know what the purpose is for that plastic sheet inside the ps2?

In other words, is it important...

a piece of tape could hold the fan wire down.

incase you didnt notice, the plastic shield sits directly above the power supply. in the event that a component in the power supply failed, not only would it prevent any electricity arcing to the groud plate and damaging the rest of the ps2, if a capacitor blew it would keep the crap inside from contaminating the mainboard of the ps2 as well. which means that if a ps2 is sent in for repair and it's just the power supply, that can be replaced instead of the possibility of having to replace other components as well.

the plastic costs next to nothing, and it makes for a cheap safeguard.
