I've been thinking about this for a while and now decided to post it ...
Which US/PAL PS2 model is prefered by most users here ?

These are the units I know well of or had a chance to open and look
    inside :

SCPH-30001 V1/V2 (V2 is same mobo just diferent bios)
    SCPH-30001 V3
    SCPH-30001 V4 (There's a version with updated bios 040 but DVD 1.30u)
    SCPH-30001R (Bios 040, DVD 2.10u)
    SCPH-35001 V5 (Bios 040, DVD 2.10u)
SCPH-39001 V6/V7 (Bios 040 or 050 in a sinlge no gap big chip)

(I know nearly nothing about PAL units, btw ....)

Even being a old unit and the worst nightmare of all modchip installers I must say that my favourite unit is the SCPH-30001 V1/V2, because of a unique feature it has: The self adjusting azimuth control for diagnosis mode. That makes the unit really good to watch DVDs and read DVDr copies.

It's a small stepper motor which spins the white cog in command of the DVD drive, getting then a specific adjust for each disc. That's a very good feature for people who use the PS2 as DVD player and game for saving space....

Nice stuff on other units :
30001R or newer have updated DVD drivers with built in support for remote controller. No waste of space on memcards.....
39001 or newer have the latest DVD drivers and nice solder pads for easier modding .... (weren't sony supposed to make things harder to mod installers ?)

Feel free to jump in and add yout thoughts to the thread ....

Yeah you got a V5. Personally I like the V4-6 series seems pretty solid all around and easy to mod. V1-3 is nice to have all the extra pieces. Bar none I would love to have a V0. They are like a rock and just cool to have but pricey and god forbid if you break anything in a mod or something.

V0 is how people here call the japanese units SCPH-10000 and SCPH-15000 .... I had one of these units a while ago and really it's rock solid ... But it has a SERIOUS flaw.... It's laser flatcable sux and to use a laser flatcable from a newer model you have to cut a piece of plastic from the drive casing so the laser can go all course on it's trail. It also lacks some IRX modules in the ROM, making it a pain to run homebrewn stuff and lacks a DVD player browser in the rom, which means you need the damned utility disc if you plan to use it to watch movies ... Not really a issue for people which plans only to play games ...
Moding it is exactly the same thing in difficulty as moding a US V1-V3 system ...

Actually it depends on the chip the Magc 3.1 JP only has 22 wires for the 10000, 15000 series and the missing wire would go to the cd/dvd rom controller and 1 wire missing from that is very welcome and makes a difficulty difference believe me.
