Just got my PS2 back today from having it modded (thx Loy).

I would like to say that everything is working 100%, but it's not...

    I have a v4 PS2, with a D M S 3 chip installed.

I've been playing backup games for a long time now using the swap method with my Gameshark2. So I know beyond a doubt, that my PS2 will read/play the type of dvd+r's that I burn games to.

With that said, here's the problem:

My PS2, upon boot up, will play any cd type game I throw at it. However, any backup DVD type game, the PS2 fails to read the disc, and I keep getting Disc error messages.

Now I've already tested to find out that my PS2 will read normal DVD movies (those play just fine). And my PS2 will play any original PS2 DVD type game. It's only the DVD type backups that it won't play (these being the exact same one's i've been playing for months now using the swap method mentioned).

Sometimes, it will boot up one of the DVD type games, but most of the time it won't. This has been tested on the same game, so it's not due to scratches, etc, or a different disc.

Also, I went a step further, and used my old swap method, and the games play perfectly, so I know it's not the laser (in case some people are going to suggest laser adjustment), as the PS2 has no problems playing any of my backup dvd types.

The problem only occurs when I try to direct boot up with the modchip of a DVD type game.

Also, my PS2 did something really weird initially. When I would boot it up, on the browser/system config screen, the little dancing lights in the background weren't dancing. Also, for a short time, I couldn't adjust the clock/date settings in the system config menu. After about an hour of useage (mainly me trying to figure out why my dvd games wouldnt play), the problem went away. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it, but I've been able to set the time/date now, and the dancing lights in the background, dance again.

As of this post, I've opened up my PS2 and completely cleaned the lense in hopes this would help things along... it hasn't

Anyone have any ideas about why it might be doing this?

check the installation. I have seen the same problem with ***4, everything original booted perfectly no DVD would boot, I did some laser adjusting and it worked.

I had someone else do the install, who's a famed professional on these boards

Anywho, what would I check for on the install? Also, I did some adjustment with the laser, and it hasn't made any difference (not pot adjustment, just the cog and angle).

And would it be the laser, since I can still use my old swap method to play my backups?

it is the chip making a lesser signal to laser, basically a timing issue. Contact the vendor and see if he will look at it.

    Update:

After testing about 20 of my backups, I have found that some will direct boot up everytime, while others, wont. (most wont)

I can get some of the one's that won't to boot up, by turning the power completely off (switch in the back) with the game inside, then turn the system on, but that only works for about 50% of the games that won't direct boot. I still have a few that won't play at all via the modchip. (they will play using my swap method though).

But even using my work-around, I still can't use my Codebreaker/Gameshark2.

I just don't understand if it's the laser, how I can play the game using my swap method, but can't with the modchip?

    Any other ideas/suggestions/opinions?

    Update 2:

After some time now, my PS2 will boot up the majority (and i say majority as in about 70%) of my DVD type games.

I've searched around on the D M S 3 forum, and no one there seems to know why this would be.

Does the modchip need a 'break-in' period? This is my first one, so I'm rather n00bish about it.

The clock problem is the usual BIOS bug, you should have exited the clock settings by pressing X, and should have entered to set it again. Then you could have adjusted the clock. As you used the machine time passed and the clock changed so you could set up that then.Sony bug, sorry. Anyway, maybe the *** boot strategy and your laser + media do not like each others, unfortunatelly that may happen with brandnew machines aswell... You can do only a few things to avoid it:

    - using other media or
    - probably a new laser would help

The problem that you do not understand is that the direct boot chips and the swap method work different way, but unfortunatelly this won't help you that much. Suggest to ask Loy to take a look at it once again, maybe it's just a cold solder point, but it's hard to tell without looking at it.

    regards, Stephen

I got almost the same problem with my silver v10 with mini 50k chip. It doesn't mather what dvd backup I load but one time they load right away and sometimes I have to start it like 7 times over before it starts and it is really irritating. I checked the solder spots with a multi meter and everything is good. I tweaked the laser and that didn't work, I tried 5 different dvd brands + and - and still no change, got another mini 50k chip and installed it and still no 100% working chip. What can I do now??? How long can the wires be and is it a problem if they cross eachother???

These chips are very poor with boot rate especially installed in V10. you may try different ground or 5v point to see if it would improve the boot rate.
