Great forum all, glad to be here. Been looking for a good site for a week or so. I am returning to the ps2 scene after a break of rather lackluster gamecube/xbox/pc games . I have never mod chipped my version 4 ps2 as I have always used the old school knife trick/gameshark. I see now that times have changed and the old school way just aint cutting it any longer. I am picking up a Sony DRU500 dvd burner this weekend and would like to play some new games. I have seen these new flip top case mods and swap magic disks. Is this a better way to go than a mod chip if you dont mind swapping disks? And if you go with a flip top/swap magic combo is that all you require (or do you need to chip it also?). What are the limitations other than not playing DVD rips (which i dont prefer anyways )? I appologize for the newbie questions but these new flip top articles have been rather confusing. Appreciate any feedback.

Thx for the reply. I was considering a no swap chip such as Messiah or Magic 3 but figured that I already have the Gameshark to do PS1 games so thought the flip top would do just about as good as a chip. Is there any downfalls to the flip top other than swapping/dvd rips/psx1 games? I saw there were a few games that you cannot get to run with flip top but none of those were of interest. The only reason I dont have the system modded with a chip is due to its age, I have had it since about 4 months after PS2 was released

Plus, just because the games that do not currently work with the flip top and swap magic don't interest you today....what do you do if a game that interests you tomorrow ends up not working with the flip top?

honestly speaking, mods arent the perfect solution either. for example, the magic 3.0 freezing on a couple popular games (originals even), and the dvd9 originals..

all in all tho, once you no-swap, you can't stop..

    get a no swap modchip.

anything that requires any sort of swapping is just stupid. do you really want to sit infront of your ps2 swapping discs everytime you boot a game?

at first it may not seem like a problem, but i can almost gurantee you will regret it after a week or so. there are GOOD noswaps out there, get one.

Thanks for all the input. I have found a place here in Las Vegas that will mod the system with a Magic 3 for $150. Does that seem close to the going rate? This is the only place that offered an install here that I could find. If this seems about right ill probably go with it sometime this weekend.

    Thanks Again,

    sounds a bit high.
for a magic 3, you are looking at about $30 for the mod and maybe $50 or so for the install..

DO NOT get magic3, these chips are f***ed

    get yourself a messiah2 or magic3.1

check people in the buy/sell/trade vendors area of this forum for installers and their prices, 150 is too much

there are plenty of people doing chip + install for under $100
